History

The study of history at Haveley Hey Community School aims to nurture and encourage children’s curiosity about the past in Britain and the wider world. Through finding out about how and why our local community, the UK and the world have developed over time, children develop an understanding of how the past influences the present. Through the study of history, pupils should be able to think critically about information presented to them and carefully consider the choices that they make, as this might have a wider impact on others and the world around them.

Our history curriculum has three golden threads running through which the children revisit in different contexts- equality; settlement and travel; democracy and power.

Our History Cultural Capital Spine

At Haveley Hey, we want every child to see history as a living story that belongs to all of us. Our History Cultural Capital Spine helps pupils explore the people, places and events that have shaped our world — celebrating bravery, creativity and diversity along the way.

From the earliest explorers and inventors to inspiring campaigners and everyday heroes, children learn about individuals from many different backgrounds, cultures and identities. They meet people like Malala Yousafzai, Emmeline Pankhurst, Bessie Coleman and King Tutankhamun, discovering how each made a difference in their own time.

By following this journey through history, pupils build curiosity, empathy and a sense of pride in how far we’ve come — and how their own actions can help shape the future.
